Screaming Hairy Armadillo

..is actually a real species of Armadillo but it does not live in the USA.  However, we have seen many armadillos of the nine-banded species on our travels through Texas, Oklahoma  and Arkansas

Unfortunately, the Armadillos we have seen have not been feeling well, in fact they were all dead.  Road kill Armadillos do not make a good picture, but we are keeping our eyes peeled for live ones, preferably before they try to cross the Interstate 40.

Little Rock, Arkansas was originally named for the big rock on a bend in the river.  We rode the trolley car yesterday - free of charge for mothers on Mothers' Day.  We looooooove this country!

We crossed the mighty Mississippi at Memphis, Tennessee today - a very big river.
Karen's rendition of Ole Man River was not appreciated by the stressed driver, Craig.

After enteringTennessee, we drove briefly into Mississippi, back into Tennessee and then finally back into Mississippi again- hmmm, our navigation is as bad as our singing!
Sad, so sad.

We are in awe of the welcome extended to us in the southern states- the genuine interest and helpfulness of the staff at the supermarket, hotels, petrol stations and even the beer store (where they are not allowed to sell wine - so we went next door to the wine store) is overwhelming.  People are so nice here.  We looooooove this place.

What Wendy learned today:  the Civil War battle site of Shiloh, Tennessee is now so peaceful and beautiful, it is hard to imagine the horrors that took place here in 1862.

What Karen did not learn today:  how fast can Armadillos walk? If Armadillos are allowed to cross double yellow lines on the Interstate then why can't we?
